Wordless Wednesday ~ Last week he fell...
Thursday, March 31, 2011
Just a little 'break'
He is fine...
However SmallBoy decided to give us a bit of a scare on Wednesday night - gosh, that's only yesterday! He was ambling across the beams of the fernery which connects to the roof, as 11yo indestructible boys are known to do and, navigating the edge beam, lost his balance and fell. Like a cat, he landed on his feet.
Unlike a cat, humans should not land on their feet from distances, especially those higher than the 2+ metres he did. So, after many many hours in hospital - from 6pm to midnight - it's good to know he has no compression spinal or neck injuries. He does, however, have a broken talus - a type 1 fracture so it is a clean, straight break - but not the typical childhood fracture and one bone which may require wiring or pins as it is still growing.
We won't know if surgery is definite until Monday as the swelling is too severe at this stage to confirm whether it is aligned by good fortune or the swelling is what is holding the bone in place. He is not allowed to weightbare at all - he must lie with his ankle raised above his heart for the next four days.
Please don't think we are making light of his accident ~ but that is what we see it as - an accident. Surprisingly for us, one doctor did make us all feel 'this big' with his opinion of having a little boy playing on the roof. Roof - tree - trampoline ~ for us it was wonderful to see SmallBoy trying to do something adventurous outside, away from 'screens' and with a confidence he does not often display. Kids are so wrapped up in a proverbial cotton-wool, when they do act 'naturally' condemning them is not appreciated. Especially when the act didn't pan-out as planned!
Poor boy was a mess of distress. 'Scuse the 'French' but shit happens - kids fall, scrape and break things - then they mend, get up and carry on! Do you rush them inside when it rains so they can't get wet? $10 someone said yes - but the correct answer is NO. Let them play - rain wets, it doesn't kill! Mud gets them dirty, it doesn't kill. Falling doesn't hurt ~ its the sudden stop on a hard surface which hurts, breaks even - so does coming off a horse, scooters or roller-skates.
Ironically I did the first part of my cert 2 first aid Wednesday afternoon, breaks and sprains and bandaging and less than an hour later there is need for practical application of the theory. The instructor said one would know if there was a break - and I did know it was broken. Even better, I knew what to do - and that was ignore Husband's opinion it was ok, maybe a strain and wait until tomorrow. Did the 'support and immobilise the limb', using a magazine and bandage. More frightening for me was when SmallBoy went into shock, but I also knew what to do and that helped keep the calm. Oi vie!!
So - Fingers crossed it all stays in place and he escapes with no surgery - I'm not confident this is going to be the case but we'll know more Monday if he doesn't end up back in before then. We've got some specific signs to look for - if any arise we need to be straight back. Already he is complaining of some additional neck pain but I am not going to panic unless when I check again in the morning the same area is hurting. Part of me says it is nothing, the other says its a strained muscle. I do not feel there is a greater issue than that but - if it is still painful in the morning, straight into the car - we'll head up to get it checked further.
Less than 24hrs post accident, he is tired of laying on his back doing very little. He is 'sending me to school' tomorrow to pick up his NetBook, homework and some library books. Bored, sore and a little vague due to pain killers - only paracetamol and ibuprofen but he's never really had anything like that before, aside from as a baby with a high temperature. As everything here was out of date (and usually is the next time we have to use it for a second time), we've had to buy them - again...
Because there was the chance SmallBoy was going to theatre - no food was given while he lay in Bay13 *irony* and 'everything' in Ballarat selling decent food closes by 830pm on a weeknight. Chemists here stay open later than restaurants mid-week! What's more, only TWO take-away outlets are open past 11pm - both displaying the same golden arches - and only the two in the centre of town. The 'account' went:
Hospital care - free
Paracetamol - $3.90
Ibuprofen - $5.35
McDonalds - $35.80
Able to bring SmallBoy home - priceless
I am rambling now ~ so very very tired. The care SmallBoy received was brilliant - the nursing staff were caring, the orthopaedic surgeon had a brilliant bedside manner and ensured SmallBoy did not become any more anxious about the likely need for an operation. He decided it was better to send him home rather than stay in overnight, as was going to happen. We didn't get home and settled into bed until after 2am, SmallBoy woke me moaning a few times, needed water at 5am (thank you Husband) and I had to get to the second day of First Aid by 930am - it was a struggle on such little sleep. OK - must go, sleep - tired - rambling - yawning uncontrollably and making silly typos - thank goodness for spell check!
Yes - he was posing for a picture to send to school...
Night all - chat over the weekend - catch up then :D

Ten Tips for Tidy
Oh I feel sick...
For once, the least of my worries is the money and, after paying the rates yesterday, the amount we have available through to the end of the month is so little anyone in the same situation would be curled up in a little ball of fear, dread and terror. Not that anything has been going down the drain on frivolities, anything and everything is going on debt and the dent seems to be showing! We haven't bought chocolate for so long, and I am hankering a block of Caramello or a few Cadbury Creme Eggs.
As much as possible I've tried to be positive and recognise we have sufficient food in the pantry, a full tank of petrol, feed for all the animals and the opportunity to get another $20-$30 if more fresh free range googie eggs are sold. I know no additional payments are due until the end of the month, all medications are at hand and the therapy costs have been budgeted and available for the coming fortnight. Regardless - it doesn't stop that churning in the guts with the realisation of how 'broke' really is the feeling as well as the status of the bank accounts.
The main part of feeling sick today is the side effects of withdrawing from a five year relationship with opiate pain medication coupled with the other night's glass of champagne, glass of red wine and an intensely bright sunny day this morning. My rose-coloured glasses help by assuring me the partaking of alcohol is to blame but the sad reality is this is the start of my narcotics withdrawal. My head wants to explode, my eyes want black-coloured glasses to block the light (not that helpful for seeing tho'), my tummy is turning and basically I feel like I am moving about 3cm above the ground in a hazy cloud of psychedelic sparkles. Some might think this sounds like fun ~ be assured, it is not!!
The things we do!! OK ~ Onward and upward. Can't fall down now ~ I've got too much to do. I hope those sparkly bits will catch me...
Getting Organised to avoid CHAOS
Being out of action the past few years is a great explanation as to why the household is cluttered, disorganised and rather messy. Sadly, its not the sole reason because we've always been hoarders living in clutter, disorganisation and untidiness. While using the brilliance of Simple Savings steered us in the right direction with saving ~ I discovered we suffer from a disorder called CHAOS "Cant Have Anyone Over Syndrome".
Can you see the desk?
For me the word 'Chores' translates as hard work ~ I prefer to use 'Goals' and these are the 5 Golden Rules for my 'Cleaning Goals' list:
1. Identify the trouble areas
2. Write a weekly cleaning goals for the house
3. Write a daily daily goals list at night for the next day
4. Establish a "Room of the Week" list
5. If you see a piece of paper/rubbish ~ pick it up and throw it out
I am not one for having a huge
As every area is a trouble area at the moment, the 'Room of the Week' is in play and, ideally, 15mins every hour or two is taken in the designated room to remove the stress of it being 'such a big task' and steadily pick away at the clutter. There are three boxes (choose what is wanted; throw this rubbish; sell or give to charity) and a basket (keeping this, its needed) which comes out at the end of the 15mins to find or return to its designated location.
All going in different directions
I've also stuck to the following Ten Tips for Tidy regime:
1. Lower my expectations for the house
~ I want a tidy, lived-in home, not a structure where nothing is touched for fear of finger prints...
3. Doing a little housework often and one big tidy on Thursday in anticipation of weekend rest strikes visitors
2. Fill the sink with hot soapy water in the morning for:
~ breakfast bowls
~ empty cups
~ other dirty dishes during the day
~ deterring ants
~ pack the dishwasher from the sink, run when full
~ ensure every cook up makes at least another 'fast' dinner option
~ make school/work lunches over the weekend, wrap and freeze to get out each morning
~ do clothes laundry one day a week, linen and towels another
~ ensure every cook up makes at least another 'fast' dinner option
~ make school/work lunches over the weekend, wrap and freeze to get out each morning
~ do clothes laundry one day a week, linen and towels another
~ placing folded doonas and sheets inside a pillowcase avoids a messy search
~ put clothes away on the day
4. Menu plan for a week
4. Menu plan for a week
~ freeze leftover roast for pie/pasta sauce
~ divide meat into meal portions before freezing
~ cut or portion fruit/veg into the crisper (FridgeSmarts) immediately
5. Grocery shop alone in the evening
~ hubby can watch his TV shows stack the dishwasher
~ no interruptions means no impulse buys
~ its mark-down time
~ no chance to buy from other (closed) shops
6. Trying not to double handle things
~ rubbish goes straight in the bin
~ fold washing as it comes off the line - pair and fold socks there too
~ underwear does not need to be ironed or folded to go in the drawer
~ put clothes away on the day
7. Leave rooms better than seen on arrival - it takes less than 5 minutes to:
~ put laundry from the floor to the hamper
~ straighten a doona, make the bed
~ wipe a bench
~ change the toilet roll
~ say something is empty (- write it on the shopping list)
~ put clothes away on the day
8. Recruit the family to help
8. Recruit the family to help
~ everyone over the age of 3-4 can put dirty dishes in the sink, collect toys to away in their room, dirty clothes in a hamper
~ everyone over the age of 5-6 can pick up rubbish. have an exclusive chore, put their clothes away on the day
~ everyone understands the repercussions of remotes/power cords withheld until things are done
9. Writing the shopping list progressively through the week
~ matched to the menu plan
~ when you notice an item is low or finished
~ try to include a reward for yourself occasionally
10. No beating myself up or calling myself a failure if I don't get 'everything' done.
~ I am only human
~ There is always tomorrow
~ Chocolate can ease the feeling of failure
Found it (and shelves)
Should Better Homes and Gardens ever wish to visit ~ I think I will steer the focus onto the garden and outdoor areas. If Vogue decides to come over ~ I'll be drawing the curtains and pretending no one is home. When friends or family drop in ~ finally I almost feel happy to have them waltz in without a three day advance warning... almost.
Supporting Our Mission
Simple Savings - If you use the link for Simple Savings ~ remember to mention you were referred by Mands because Simple Savings offer members either $10 or extra membership for sending new members over. It's a really helpful and beneficial website.
MandsMission on eBay - There one lonely little item up for sale at the moment. But there is plenty on its way since we started following the list above to declutter.
Well, time to tidy up in the kitchen and get that dishwasher stacked. Table is cleared, benches are wiped, rinsing done only stacking to go. Plus all the washing was put away. Even writing about it positively rubs off ~ see how you go and please report any successes.
No idea what is in store for tomorrow other than getting in the garden to weed the 'big garden bed' and move the little roosters ~ who aren't that little any more. We really must get them into the freezer because we are almost out of chook in the freezer and the prices don't seem to be going down any time soon.

Who 'rained' on our parade...
Out front this afternoon ~ the water draining away...
Finally ~ some blue sky AND sunshine...
And let me say straight up we are nowhere near as affected, devastated or damaged as our QLD friends ~ but boy oh boy over 250mm in three days and a sloping unsealed roadside verge running along a highway turned our driveway into a river, our doorway into a kiddie pool and the carport ended up with water up two inches of flow and debris. Damn it.
Front Lawn Thursday
Front Lawn Friday
Add to that a four car garage containing all our lawn sale boxes, the new carpet rolls, tools, toys and MILs stored goods (these were on pallets thankfully!) with the driveway river streaming straight in under the roller doors and we have ended up with great motivation to cull, toss and clear out a lot of wet, soggy 'stuff'. I think I am most upset about the rolls of plush carpet as that was to replace the old cruddy coverings in the lounge room and most grateful that Hubby's mum's items were not damaged in any way as all were on pallets.
Carport Thursday (Hubby dug in a trench after this)
Carport Friday
It seems divine intervention has 'rained' a message from above. The time had come to cull, to simplify those things that are just 'things' and we had been making some mighty fine in-roads to de-clutter, remove items that were unnecessary or give those that were a place to be stored for using, not just continually looking for things or replacing them with new 'stuff'. You've probably seen some of the before and after pics, even tho I've been slack updating because the focus as been more on the action, rather than the distraction of talking about what we were 'gunna' do or twaddling on about what we've done ॐ less is best, we are blessed, out with the mess ~ safe & well & dry(er) although a little muddy, sore and frustrated. Nothing compared to our QLD friends, but gee whizz it was wet...
Front door Thurs
Front door Fri morning
Actually I am truly grateful the trees did not come down in the 90kmh wind, that no true damage was incurred and after mopping up inside the house we've come away ok. The carport mess has gone straight in our trailer or onto the compost as it was mostly dirt, leaves and other such debris but with the level getting up in the garage we will need to hire a medium to large dumpster bin ~ so there's about $300 to scrounge up by Monday. *sighs*
Front door receding Fri lunch
At the back door Friday
I need to say Thank you to some very lovely and special people. Thanks to my sister Jode for taking the time to check all was OK up our way (I hope you didn't get too soaked either - chat next weekend); Thank you to Patricia ~ please do come visit as we would love to share a meal, the pasta maker will be mastered and it will be something wonderful; Thank you Simple Savings, especially my Glowie friends who have given us some lovely support by phone, text and email; Thank you to the Jonahs ~ have we said you are very important and special people in our lives recently? Well you are!! Dare I say thank you Hellstra?? Maybe not yet...
Spoke to that phone company on Thursday - wow, that was only yesterday - and received a credit of $50 on our already in credit phone bill for the inconvenience incurred over the last few months. However the greater issue was the $409.83 taken from our credit card to pay for fees and charges incurred disconnecting our home line, creating a new ASDL connection and reconnecting our internet ~ all because we tried to get a low rate line. Grrrr ~
Called the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman last week because the fall out from the November disconnection was still ongoing. Well well well ~ we have had contact and, provided all funds are paid as 'assured', the matter will be finally over. But how's this for painful - first offer was to credit the phone $409 (we are already $120 in credit and dont make calls from the landline, we use voip or skype); how about a cheque - taking six to ten WEEKS to process (umm, our credit card max'd out due to this cock up). So I asked if it could refund back on the credit card - Hellstra has the details and take from it when an amount it owing - no, cant do that, sorry. So then I asked if it can be transferred into the bank ~ well, yes it can, if we don't mind waiting three to ten BUSINESS DAYS... Hello?!!! This is an option that could see the funds in the account by mid next week to transfer to the credit card!!! Another Grrrr ~
So lesson learned ~ ask ask ask. If the offers being made are only going to mean more expense - ask for an arrangement that won't add to the expenses and negotiate. What's more, the refund will come in as our next repayment on the credit card is due and will be more than the minimum required. Timely and beneficial. Now to find another $6000 to get this debt down...
I've got heaps of other news ~ all savings related but we need to focus on cleaning up this mess Mother Nature provided to give us motivation and incentive to get full swing into the de-cluttering!
Any contributions to the Spare Change Jar or the Treasure Chest would be welcome ~ mostly to get this skip hired, some trenches dug and new carpet.
Actually the new carpet can wait - what we have is fine and will hide any dirt and mud making its way inside over the next little while. It's waited a year and can wait a little longer...
Stay safe, stay happy and take care of you and yours xx

HELLSTRA Strikes Again
Dinosaur Trees ~ can you see the T-Rex and the Stegosaurus??
Feeling way too ripped off and so over having a telephone company which makes it almost impossible to have a good service to post!! Hellstra (because the word Telstra makes me sick) has done it again. $409.84 ~ I don't think so. And I've worked out exactly what this represents ~ the installation of a 'new' ADSL2 line because Hellstra incorrectly disconnected the one we had and our internet and voip provider's system 'interpreted' this as a breach of contract!
Not going into it all again - you can read about the schmozzle and stuff up here. Tomorrow is going to be very interesting.
So to the tune of Cold Chisels' Cheap Wine...
(sing along with the music here)
Had a post, then my good mood died
It's thanks to ol' Hellstra
They stuffed us up last year, you know
I thought they'd fixed the line
Instead Hellstra, they charged a bomb
But not to us, no they passed it on
And charged it to our Internet
Which sent it on with fines
No way
Hellstra's done, too bloody oath
Hellstra's done, they have got my goat
Ombudsman
Ombudsman
Ombudsman
Thirteen calls and almost 20 days
You'd think they'd get it right
Hellstra never called me back
I rang 'em every time
I never shouted, I never cried
Even though I boiled inside
Each time I had to speak to them
Or rated poor feed back
And now
Hellstra's done, too bloody oath
Hellstra's done, finally got my goat
Ombudsman
Ombudsman
Ombudsman
Hang on
Going through the bills, drinking UDLs, alls fine
Saw another cost, 400 bucks, oh my
I thought we'd got this fixed from the time before
Got a little credit but they charged much more
Never got it right and they made it worse with every call
With every call, yeah...
So if they think they're gonna mess with me
You know that I'm gonna call
Hellstra I don't feel the love
But with the Ombudsman you'll jump
You'll see
Hellstra's done, too bloody oath
Hellstra's done, who's the scape goat
Ombudsman
Ombudsman
Ombudsman
You make them fix this up
(repeat)
Oh that was SO satisfying!!
Mind you ~ Internode was able to explain perfectly what the charges were, why we were charged a fee for cancelling our contract (which we didn't but with Hellstra disconnecting our line, the computers read it as a cancellation, then a reconnection fee at a rather high rate as it then needed a new 'port' or link or whatever the technical bizzo to be installed and activated as the one we had was taken by another customer/supplier) and Internode did that in 10mins over ONE call. Why can't Hellstra do that?
Why can't the staff at Hellstra have the same story? Do they not learn the same rules ~ or is it a plot to confuse and frustrate? If so - they've been taught well!! Why does no one from Hellstra ever call you back ~ even when they promise?? And if supervisor permission is required ~ why is there no supervisor on the shift?? If I get an answer to any or all of those questions (ha!!) I'll let you know ~ but please do not hold your breath! You'll probably pass out before anyone finds out...
Come on Hellstra ~ get with it!! I want my money back, and the letter that says it was not through a fault made by us ~ you don't have to say all your staff made and compounded the problem, but you must say we didn't!! Stoopid people, but we need to have the landline. Grrrr
Rant over ~ having dinner and going to watch the House of Food Obsessives on SBS at 830pm!
Catch up tomorrow when in a much more communicable mood *laughs*
If you are able to please contribute to our Spare Change Jar or the Treasure Chest at the top of each side bar ~ please please do ~ not only will we be extremely grateful, it might turn my frown upside down and get a smile back on my dial *grins*

What? Huh? When did that happen...
*sighs*
This last weekend, actually this whole last week, I have been reminded over and over I am no longer 21. *little sob* In fact, it is obvious I am no longer anywhere near my 20s. *bigger sob* As for the 30s ~ lets just wipe them off the cards now *has a little cry*
But it was fun trying at the time!! And there may be hope for this old chook...
It felt like it was taking more than THREE FULL DAYS to recover! Something is terribly wrong with that. I allowed for a day or two, even thought the next morning things were going really well and I had use the right amount of moderation. It had seemed I was wrong.
It would have been a low spend weekend - again it seemed I was wrong - discovering human nature likes to take advantage of those having a party ~ no ~ not us, although we were part of the few who contributed a heck of a lot of cash to cover the abuse of a bar tab set up by the birthday girl for her sisters and brother. People are quite horrid, arent they. *sighs* again...
Had a wonderful weekend of catching up with friends and family ~ the friends 'do' was awesome with the 'free' food, wine and cocktails (mmmm ~ lurve cocktails ~ more so when fweeee!!) which came with a ride home at no cost and the easy laughter and chatter of old friends, ending at the civilised time of about 1230.
My sister's party was great ~ and it was really enjoyable chatting to the family, in-laws, kids and such. Sadly, some friends decided to run up a 'family' tab to the tune of $1000 and, as you would guess, my little sister was distraught and caught short. Thank goodness we had budgeted for a bit of a spend. As seven of us left, hoping for the impossible - to find taxis at 1am in South Yarra/Prahran to get us 'home' - we got to the corner of Punt Road and Commercial Road where an 8-seat taxi bus happened to cut through the petrol station, vacant and happy to take us all. Fluke, karma, whatever - what a relief and score!!
Caught up with MIL on Sunday and headed off home. Monday felt like I had drunk too much still or perhaps eaten something which did not agree with me. Tuesday pretended to feel OK in the morning to do some volunteer work (will tell you about that another day) then faded ~ not quietly either.
Today, still feeling like death warmed up ~ a trip to the doctor was made. Better part of $150 for the appointment AND medication because I have not scrimped on doing a half arsed job on being ill. I have whooping cough ~ and an ear-nose-throat infection. Add to that a virus in the bronchial AND laryngitis ~ four prescriptions later, and vile tasting stuff at that, still feel like crap but at least I know my lungs will stay in my chest now...
Merry Happy Christmas Holiday time ~
Please send only good wishes, healthy thoughts and get well vibes ~ I think these are so much more needed than any coins in the spare change jar this week. I know all of us want this Christmas to be happy, joyful and fun ~ because the last two have been a bit flat, tight and limiting ~ and we would love a super special fun time this year. THAT would be the best gift of all!!
Night all ~ must sleep ~ again...

Non-Comms ~ the frustrating monopoly called Hell(stra)...
Within something so small hides the ability of hugeness ~ the joy of Bonsai
Honestly, when last we spoke the car was playing up, getting a new(old) engine and to be back on the road before the weekend of my birthday. That didn't happen...
Then the telecommunication monopoly referred with disgust in this house as Hellstra to which we pay line rental to on a monthly basis ~ purely for the surety of phone contact should/if InterNode, our Internet and voip provider, have signal difficulties ~ decided its credit management team 'special circumstances' advice and action was up the garden path, then provided eight other consultants to stuff it up even further and more complexly over a period of eight or so days, probably taking about 8 hours of calling and hold time - not one single (promised) return contact was made - all it online, operational, communicational and Internode took under 12hrs to reinstate Internet and voip once its 'wholesaler' (aforementioned Hellstra) accepted the order blah blah techo babble request.
Sure we had to pay for a reconnection with our Internet provider, sure Hellstra issued a credit against its bill for said amount to our Hellstra account, but it is still not the end of the issue. Still chortle with a handful of disbelief at the discussion with one particular customer team member called Peter who is hopefully receiving some additional training, assistance and supervision with service protocols, anger management and ear-wax removal to enable him the abilities and right to be able to take calls from customers in the future.
Saving the BS behind the car - motor - communication saga . . . Um, is that a theme?
Is it no longer considered good business practice to call the customer, you know that person who pays to use a particular service and has the ability to source most elsewhere? Might not be the best of news, but telling me at 8.35am you're on the way to take our child to school as our car is, yet again, not available or going and having had no responses for 24-48 hours, one makes alternative arrangements...
Let's save that comedy of errors - its a good one too. And Hellstra can be left here too ~ in some ways contributing to the reduction of one of our regular, ongoing budgeted expenses. At minimum, it brings the phone down with a credit which will cover line rental costs for about 5-6 months. If we are lucky, the reinstatement of Internet might be flagged to just do the techie bitties and not a reconnect, or if a reconnect it can be the lower charge. At least, in the long run its covered - somewhere...
We are in discussions with the bank for a wee repayment break, reduction, hardship application to enable us to stay on track with payments, but get these into the Line Of Credit so if Husband does have a longer period without finding employment after 3-6 months of being the brute strength and partial motivator, house husband, carer, hunter, gardener, gatherer - we have built ourselves a buffer in case part time work offers are on the lower earning end.
eBay has had its hits and misses ~ largely impacted by being off-line (scored another mark Hellstra), but aided in some ways as we were able to de-clutter and scavange about in a more hands on fashion. Writing this, I have realised now why I am so darn achy and sore of late. Bit over doing it methinks in hindsight! Oh well. Be aware by the start of the weekend there will be a few items going up every day to get the flow going. We've got a little system going - and we've got to work in with Avon items - which earned us $14 this campaign period! Not bad!!
Biggest 'save' was the tax return which brought $3k into the picture. We'd had this 'assigned' to VISA, Line of Credit and Mortgage - the left over, if any, for birthdays (7th, 12th, 13th is family) and Christmas, including petrol to get to the 'party'. So everything got a bump and the new amounts will be up on the Weekly Update for this week. There's a fair bit to catch up on since the last report.
Until tomorrow...

A frustrating weekend
At least it needs no petrol...
One of the numerous nephews was having a birthday party this weekend to celebrate his third birthday and as it was being held over the other side of the state (across the bay) we decided to make a weekend of it. By breaking up the travel to make it less impacting on my back, we had plans to visit Husband's mum on the Friday and stay there the night.
Then, leaving in the morning we planned to head over to the Mornington Peninsula to party with the little peoples, eat yummy food and fill up on birthday cake (and it was a rippa of a dinosaur cake too) then catch up with a few friends over on the Mornington side, staying the night with friends. Today the plan was to see another long-time friend before heading over to my Dad and check out all the reno's he's done to his factory...
But in doing the 'right thing' and getting the car serviced proved to be our un-doing. Sure, running on three cylinders is not going to be good for the car especially over such a distance and not being able to locate a reco-engine to suit the car meant the whole weekend's plans were cancelled.
And they made seed-men heads *sobs* That would have been SO much fun! An assortment of nieces, nephews, aunties, uncles and grandparents all stuffing their stockings and making funny faced 'things' to grow seed-hair on. My sister is one of the better frugals ~ making the most of only a little. I love the way she has been able to travel the world, live in numerous countries across the planet and still be able to enjoy the life and sights of each place she visits!
This week is a mix of doctors', therapy and assessments to make sure the spinal fusion is holding in well and not causing any issue. There has been some weakness down the right side and, all going well, this is not due to nerves being compressed or damaged causing some paralysis or loss of functioning.
We made it very clear to the doctor we were not in a position to pay for additional therapy so tomorrow we are setting up a care-plan that should enable the pain clinic to be covered under a rehabilitation programme and the new therapy appointments to be bulk billed with no gap payments required. If we were required to pay even the minimum fees ($90) weekly for the first six weeks (as required), we would have to cancel and not be able to attend.
Sure, the pension card does provide a significant discount to many of the appointments but so many consulting therapists feel the need to charge on top of the charges set by Medicare and this is the cost which puts health care out of reach of low income earners. My physio sessions are covered to $90 per visit, yet we are expected to pay an additional $30 at each appointment ~ $120 for a 30min session. That really does seem unreasonable at times. Surely $180 an hour is enough at the best of times ~ why more?
Yes, a little bit of financial panic because all the mortgage/line of credit sweep payments are scheduled tonight and there is absolutely nothing there to 'swipe'. We've transferred enough to cover the mortgage, but the LOC is really starting to become a worry ~ interest hold or not. Maybe the panic is unwarranted, we don't know if that means nothing actually moves out/over to the account for the next few months and we must get $500 in there before the end of November so fingers crossed eBay picks up some good sales and this gets covered!
Keeping positive, staying semi-calm and if worse comes to worse, we can sell the motorbike (the Suzuki, not the Guzzi) and hope for $500 for that. Maybe...

Rich week ~ for a moment
Just the cutest little billie-goat you ever did see!
Then all the bills were withdrawn and we looked more 'normal' again *grins* Being pro-active this week on the fees, charges and added costs from our financial 'institutions' and have saved ourselves quite a bit in the long run.
Our savings account has a $5 monthly charge ~ we asked if this could be waived as we only use online banking. Not only was the fee removed - it was back-dated to the start of the financial year. $15 was put back into the savings account. Brilliant!
Our VISA interest rate was up over 20% ~ we asked if this could be brought back under 10% and had the rate changed to 9.2% plus no annual fee for the life of the card ($90). Awesome!
Our Line Of Credit has an interest rate of 7.9% ~ we asked if this could be held for a few months while we get ahead and were granted 3months no interest (providing we can put $500 in each of those months or it will revert back). It's a start!!
Then there's the freebies:
In two months it will be Christmas and it is not going to be the console, DVD, games orientated Christmas of 'norm'. SmallBoy will receive a new kit for school and, being his last year in primary, we will get his Year6 Bomber Jacket for a present, as well as his school NetBook.
Got a really awesome dog lead from Paws Club to give to one of the Mum's for their dog;
Got some Dr LeWinn men's facial care products for the brother(s-in-law);
Got two teen packs of Dr LeWinn's skin care/acne care products for MudGuts and the half-bro;
We will be making up pamper packs for most for Christmas ~ and we'll be making those in the last few weeks, tailored to each brother, sister, niece or nephew as appropriate.
Plus a few bonuses:
For those who have used Chrisco, HamperCo, Castle Hampers or any of those type of set ups to pay for Christmas in advance, while they can be 'convenient', have you ever thought just how (un)economical this option can really be??
In 2006, 2007 and 2008 each weekly/fortnightly shop we would by a $10 store voucher (or more if we were under the shopping budget) and kept them together for the mid December shop. With around $500 to spend, we'd have all the food, booze, decorations and more to carry through to Australia Day - almost two months without shopping for anything other than basics. It meant we could take drinks to every party, snacks to munch while on summer holiday AND save our shopping money for December and January ~ well, we'd put it in the mortgage!
Sadly this year we've not done this as effectively and those vouchers saved have been used to buy groceries over these lean months. You do what you have to do!!
Hoping those last few eBay items are paid for soon ~ really need to get more items up ~ been a little tired and sore so it's a-plodding along...
Plus if anyone has a spare lawnmower or car ~ happy to take them off your hands *grins*
Two chances right?? Buckley's and none...

~ Welcome to the Front Page ~
Hi there – my name is Mands and I am hoping you can help get me and my family out of a bind with debt. Yes, we are asking total strangers for the gift of few dollars, even a few cents to help pay off our debt, stop the interest accruing, building and getting further out of control.
This debt did not come about due to lavish spending, over-indulging or financial mismanagement. Most was incurred due to medical expenses, assisted living charges, travel costs while I waited for and now rehabilitating from spinal surgery at the same time the single incoming wage under went restructure, reductions due to the financial crisis' impact on Husband's employer.
We are not asking for you to pay it for us ~ rather help contribute to pay it down with us.
*smiles*
Back in 1997, after my first and only attempt at aerobic fitness, I was in this almighty car accident – another driver decided to cut across a six lane highway and collected me along the way (and a few poles, signage, a fence and a letterbox). Watching the world through the windows of a spinning car is quite surreal ~ more so when the darn thing catches on fire while rain buckets down. Luckily, I didn’t seem to be too badly injured.
A knight in a long brown dri-as-a-bone coat stopped, donned his akubra hat to keep his head dry before taking his trusty fire extinguisher from the back of his Jeep, kicking up the bonnet of my still running vehicle and slather it with white foam. Sure did the trick on the fire, although the motor kept running without keys in the ignition. She was a fighter to the end.
My BushMan knight hero hung his extinguisher back on his Jeep, tipped his hat to the small gathering of sopping, shaken survivors, jumped in his vehicle and drove off into the torrential storm, leaving me with a smouldering car and an excellent tale to tell. There's more about this in Meanderings here.
The next day at work, my poor body went into shock and spasm thus starting the long journey to find for a decade I'd got about with spinal fractures. I'd soldiered on to the point of no more with pain and leg numbness ~ 2007 started with a series of events heading a down hill slope. More on that, starting with reference to 'that' MRI is here in Meanderings.
Unable to sit, barely able to walk and not remembering what it was like to stand up straight – that was the end of work for me. An operation in September 2008 had the surgeon declare it was a ‘real dog’s breakfast’ in there but pins, screws, plates and all things gory were inserted for the slow road to recovery to begin. The surgeon wasn’t wrong when he said to expect nothing for the first year, some improvement in the second year but plan on taking the next 5 years off. You can read a little about the op here, I'll see if I've got some 'back' shots for those who just must have evidence this is real
Three months ago, my husband ceased paid employment to be my full time carer, reducing our income by $550 a week. It ends 25years in a single industry with business relationships as strong at the end as the start. The gaining the time previously spent away from home working, we have productive home time, reliable help and physical changes for the better - physically, mentally and aesthetically. No longer feeling we were doing it alone, now we enjoy a simple(!!) life on $628 a week from government payments. Why no compensation you ask? Because the other driver’s husband was a solicitor and the knight in dri-as-a-bone drove off into the night. The court awarded 50/50 no fault; TAC covered 13wks income in 1997, blah blah, legal stuff and that was that - all over red rover. Darn it!! Life goes on...
Today, October 6 2010, I sat down
Actually I lay down - with the budget ~ and worked out what we have, what we owe and boy, we are on such a tight deal. Our mortgage is $276pw and we've not missed a payment. This is not going to help clear our current debt if we still plan to eat, stay warm, put petrol in the car to get SmallBoy to school (not that he would be complaining). The repayment rates increase with the interest rate rises, the interest accrues ~ oh why can't we put all the interest/revenue raising/life expense increases on hold for a year or so and let us catch up, get things back to zero!?!?!

So, thinking outside the square and hoping to make this as entertaining as it is rewarding. Be warned from the on-set : I tend to waffle, change thought mid-way, discuss our options 'aloud' to see how it looks. I will try to keep that process on ~Mands Meanderings. It's my personal blog, started while waiting for surgery. Please forgive me in advance for over-flow...
On a Mission to Find Change
Aside from the mortgage, which is not part of the mounting debt we want to clear, we owe the following:
The VISA credit card (drastic plastic) ~ $5,836.33 (was $18k in 2005)
Outstanding Bills ~ $3,930.63 so far – sadly there may be more
Personal Loan (Wyndham) ~ $4,057.94 (was $11k in 2008)
Line of Credit (attached to the mortgage ~ $21,764.21 (was $16k with $7k available end 2008)
Frighteningly Scary GRAND TOTAL : $ 35,369.49
Hold on a tick ~ just need to scoop my stomach up off the floor and put my poor heart back in place.
I guess that's $1 from 35,370 people with $1 to gift to us ~ if you can't make the dollar, perhaps the 49cents then??
We've included where accounts were at the maximums and looking at the reductions already made - we think we have done a terrific job bringing that down on the reduced single income (plus ridiculous transport costs due to distance) Husband earned. The personal loan is less than 2years old and we'd almost got that cleared. With some outstanding monies paid and Husband's tax sorted, this could be gone – completely – finalised. Or perhaps it is best in the LOC to keep interest down while keeping the mortgage paid with our benefits. While we are no longer using the drastic plastic VISA credit card ~ we reduce the limit each time we get $2000 down and plan to have it with a $3000 limit within 18mths with your help...
Some of our debt has already had no interest applied, or been reduced down and bill repayment amounts are arranged or in the process of being so. Our home line was averaging $45 per month, most in line rental fees – we had this lowered to $20 and use the mobile phone on contract for out-going calls, or email, or text. I'm about to find out if the home line be reduced if we make it an incoming only line. My mobile is incoming and will go onto recharge and not account now the contract is up. Husband is locked in for another 12 months. Internet is under $50 and with more family and friends doing the Skype thing, we'll look at getting into that perhaps.
Had we not had income low enough to meet the threshold to receive government payments for the next 6-12 months, this shout-out probably would never have come to fruition. I don't think we would have thought to ask for help through the kindness of strangers, especially when others might see as a crass grab for cash ~ but be assured the intention is not to have kind people pay all our debt for us. Not at all ~ you can help by throwing your spare change our way; purchasing from the eBay shop or 'treating us' to a cafe latte ~ and feel good knowing you have helped the Mission maintain momentum!!
We are hoping to achieve a few things while on our Mission:
- Clear the clutter we have gathered over the past 10 years
- Provide new homes for items by selling on eBay
- Stop wasteful spending on chemical cleaners, fancy footwear and pre-package pantry delights - - this might have to include chocolate *sobs*
- Simplify life so it is not such a stressful, unstable roller-coaster ride
- Show and explain what we do to reduce debt, make-do, become less wasteful, lower financial stresses, find happiness *blissful sigh* We can make something wonderful happen!
- Encourage others to organise themselves so they never become 'that poor family you heard about who...' personally!
- Become frugal with money and aim for our goal of semi self-sufficiency and environmentally friendly living
And primarily; reduce the debt to zero and maintain a lifestyle fitting within our means.
Thus ~ the journey begins.
